Cast iron drain lines don’t last forever. In older commercial buildings they corrode from the inside until they crack, leak, and back up. Here’s how we replaced a failing cast iron system and proved the new one tight with a smoke test.
The building’s drain-waste-vent system was original cast iron that had been in service for decades. Cast iron corrodes from the inside out — the pipe wall thins, the bottom of the pipe channels out, and eventually it cracks and separates at the joints. By the time we were called, the system was showing the classic late-stage symptoms: slow drains, recurring backups, and moisture where the pipe had begun to fail.
Repiping an occupied commercial building is as much about sequencing as it is about pipe. We opened access to the risers and horizontal mains, then isolated and replaced the system one run at a time so the building could keep operating. Working in sections keeps the drains in service as much as possible and contains the work to the areas that actually need it.
Our team removed the failed cast iron and rebuilt the drain, waste, and vent runs with new pipe, joined with stainless shielded no-hub couplings and supported to code. New cleanouts were set where they belong so the system can be maintained and cleared easily in the future. Every riser and main was routed and strapped for a durable, serviceable install — not a patch over failing pipe.
New pipe isn’t finished until it’s proven tight. We ran a smoke test on the rebuilt drain-waste-vent system — pushing a safe, visible smoke through the pipes so any gap, unsealed joint, or open connection would show up immediately as escaping smoke. With the system holding smoke, we confirmed every new joint and coupling was sealed and the DWV was venting correctly before anything was closed back up.
The failing cast iron is gone, replaced with a new drain-waste-vent system that’s properly supported, fitted with fresh cleanouts, and smoke-tested tight. The building’s drains flow and vent the way they should, and the owner has documentation that the new system passed before walls and ceilings were closed. Because the work was phased and smoke-verified, there were no surprises after the fact.
